A Study of the Intellectual Style of Rumi Focusing on the Word ‘Pain’ and its application in Masnavi

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: human emotions, Especially pain and suffering, their meaning and how the poet deals with them form a great amount of the intellectual and linguistic style of mystics like Rumi. This study will categorize the causes of pain in Rumi’s poetry and based on his works, it will try to answer the question if there is a transcendental objective behind pain and suffering or not. Then, the ways to get out of suffering from the poet’s point of view will be discussed.
METHODOLOGY: the present research has been done through descriptive-analytical method by using library resources. After a morphological study of the words ‘pain’ and ‘suffering’, the lines of poetry dealing with pain were collected and categorized.
FINDINGS: the worldview of the poet implies that all the roots of pain and suffering are in lack of understanding of the relation with the creator of the universe. Therefore, all of the warnings mentioned in Rumi’s works and done for the purpose of the virtues that can diminish the signs of these pain and sufferings and give hope to the individual. Among the advantages of pain and suffering mentioned by Rumi are the purgation of the soul, self-discovery, flourishing of the talents, creation of a sense of delight, removal of bigger dangers and purposefulness of life.
CONCLUSION: according to Rumi, reliance on God can change sorrow into delight, change the inner values and criteria and find a positive meaning in one’s pain so that it can be tolerated more easily and the lover may look at the world from a new perspective of love and gratitude. Therefore, pain in the intellectual and linguistic style of Rumi is transition from pain to delight.
